Original 'Three Rekha' painting

Day ten from my Daily Healing series depicts a memory from an afternoon spent at Srirangapatna Ghat in Karnataka, India. On this afternoon, I sat alongside the Kaveri river watching people bathe, wash saree fabric in the river, pray in the small temples and sit in the shady spots created by the ancient trees. It was a calm moment, everyone seemed happy and content. I fell in love with the paint marks made on one of the trees, it was three simple lines. The contrast of the ancient gnarly tree and the new bright, graphic elements was inspiring to me. It was late afternoon, I also remember the sun being a fully visible large circle in the sky. I've used the four graphic elements that I remember from that day, the three lines and the circle. I've used found paper to represent the tree, it's also old. My three graphic lines are created in gouache in burnt orange. The elipse is cut from the paper to allow the heat of the intense black colour to punch through.

The word Rekha is a Sanskrit word meaning line. As Jaya Jaitly writes in Inspirations for Graphic Design from India, “Nothing was random or meaningless”. With my original paintings, I wish for nothing to be meaningless. My creations may come from a tiny moment, but for me they have a lot of meaning and take me to my favourite feeling – inspired and wanting to create. I believe this is how I will find my own voice in the world of art.

About Daily Healing

My art has always been a reflection of my travels and experiences. But, this latest series is reflective of an entirely new journey. As I navigate health treatments, these paintings have become a healing exercise, a moment of calm in my day when I can visualise and paint memories from my past travels. When I'm not feeling so good, I revisit this fresh, duney beach in Sweden, or relive the pitter-patter of a rainy night in Soho.

Pay What You Can

Because I am unable to work at the moment, I have decided to add these original paintings to my lineup of prints. However, I am offering the option to pay what you can if you feel pulled to support me and my work as I embark on this new journey. I have a guide price of £30, but you can pay less if you need to, or more if you want to. Simply select the price you want to pay before adding to cart.
