Original 'Nila, Jaipur' Collage
Day nine from my Daily Healing series, this collage depicts a memory from Nila House, an organisation that supports sustainable textile crafts in India. My memory of visiting Nila House in Jaipur is very calming, the house was white and full of cream, ivory, beige and white textiles, some antique, some modern. Although the colours were minimalist, I distinctly remember the intricacies of the textiles. The grid patterns in the weaves of the fabric had a meditative quality to them, so tactile to hold, so calming to look at, and such an admirable feeling to see the quality of the craft and learn the ancient stories behind them.
My collage is an abstract ode to Nila. The pencil lines drawn on the found papers tell a story of weaving and the layers of off-white papers are like folds in cloth. Indian textiles are often decorated everywhere. The weaver's story runs throughout the cloth, not just the exterior area that is seen, but the inside of pockets, or the underside of a tablecloth will hold a hidden delight. The centre square in the collage has thread lines drawn on the reverse. A hidden delight that can be seen subtly through the thin paper, and at the corners where the paper curls up.

About Daily Healing
My art has always been a reflection of my travels and experiences. But, this latest series is reflective of an entirely new journey. As I navigate health treatments, these paintings have become a healing exercise, a moment of calm in my day when I can visualise and paint memories from my past travels. When I'm not feeling so good, I revisit this fresh, duney beach in Sweden, or relive the pitter-patter of a rainy night in Soho.
