Original 'Emerald Backwaters Kerala' painting

Number 11 from my Daily Healing series depicts a memory from mornings spent at a home situated on the backwaters in Kerala, South India.

I drank my cup of tea every morning in the garden facing the water. Even as early as 7am, the heat would be intense. But across the whole of Kerala, nothing was more intense than the colours that my eyes enjoyed daily. And starting each day watching the passers by on the water was no different. The water itself was emerald green colour, a deep forest emerald. Some fallen coconuts would be taken along with the gentle flow of the river, but the water was mostly very still. Not even a gentle breeze was present. Ever. Men passed by on long thin boats, even they glided very slowly, a bit like the bead of sweat that would usually be making its way southwards on my face. Every man navigating the river wore a mundu tied around his waist with a bare chest. The cotton sarongs were usually in a matching emerald green colour, turmeric yellow or deep pinky red. To me, these are the colours of Kerala. My painting illustrates these vibrant dots gliding horizontally in front of me. A friendly smile and wave would always come my way and this routine got my day off to a great start. It's a beautifully relaxing memory in my mind that I can visit anytime I need to. As Alanis Morisette said, Thank you India.

About Daily Healing

My art has always been a reflection of my travels and experiences. But, this latest series is reflective of an entirely new journey. As I navigate health treatments, these paintings have become a healing exercise, a moment of calm in my day when I can visualise and paint memories from my past travels. When I'm not feeling so good, I revisit this fresh, duney beach in Sweden, or relive the pitter-patter of a rainy night in Soho.

Pay What You Can

Because I am unable to work at the moment, I have decided to add these original paintings to my lineup of prints. However, I am offering the option to pay what you can if you feel pulled to support me and my work as I embark on this new journey. I have a guide price of £30, but you can pay less if you need to, or more if you want to. Simply select the price you want to pay before adding to cart.
