A one-off original collage of woven papers with an abstract gouache painting inspired by Joan Miró's Dona i Ocell sculpturein Barcelona
I created the collage background of this piece in a beautiful neighbourhood in Portland, Oregon. Almost every house in the neighbourhood had a Black Lives Matter sign on the front lawn. The brown paper and tissue paper that I used to weave the background was found in Portland. The BLM movement inspired me to weave together papers of different textures and tones to create a union which became a canvas for painting.
The painting on top of the collage background was inspired by the Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird) sculpture by Joan Miró, that I saw on my first day living in Barcelona. In Catalan the word for a "bird" (ocell) can be used as slang for penis. This might be reflected in the phallic shape of Miró's sculpture. It has a vulva shaped split down the side of the shaft. It reminded me that we are all made with the same ingredients, we are unified by this, we are woven.
Original signed painting. Mix of gouache, brown paper and tissue paper. There are some stains, bumps and tears on the surface of the found paper that I chose to paint this piece on. 310 x 290mm.
